Pregnancy, Diabetes, and the "Artificial Pancreas"

The words "artificial" and "pancreas" might conjure up images of fake organs when thrown around the media but this little device - which could save countless lives, is actually more like an attached robot than it is a realistic looking implanted organ. In fact, the artificial pancreas is even worn on the outside of the body and can be attached to clothing.

This little device has a continuous glucose monitor and an insulin pump to give round the clock treatment. The goals of this item are to lower instances of abnormal birth and deaths of pregnant women with Type 1 Diabetes (by advanced hypoglycemia or otherwise).

In the words of Martha Stewart, I think this is a very "good thing".
