There is a vaccine that can help prevent RSV called Synagis, but it's very hard to get. When my daughter was born very prematurely, she qualified for it and got it for her first year. When our insurance providers switched, she was denied, and two months later, despite our care (not taking her into stores, public places, etc. for nearly two years!), she contracted RSV. Luckily she did not require hospitalization, but she did need nebulizer treatments constantly for about a month. It was a very stressful period full of constant worry.

After that, our doctor fought with our insurance to help her get the Synagis shot each month again. They agreed to do it--if we paid $500 a month for it. So we did. And she didn't get it again. We were broke all year for those payments--you only get Synagis during RSV season, which is October through March, if I remember correctly--but it was very worth it. Many children are not as lucky as our daughter and end up hospitalized or worse. This vaccination should be mass produced and available to all babies for a lower cost. :(

Thanks for the info on the vaccination for those that can get it! It's too bad it's not readily available to everyone though.

Insurance companies make me sick. A course in college I had to take really showed me a "behind the scenes" view so to speak. I used to work in geriatrics and had to quit because between insurance, medicare and big money hungry corporations, I just couldn't feel good going to work and participating in that. It infuriates me when are children are effected by the greed.

Me too, Hellen. Corporate greed is bad enough when it's about the almighty dollar, but when it effects actual lives, it sinks to a new level. :(

And the $500 we paid monthly for the shots were only copays--the shots themselves were quite higher.

I can only imagine how much the total cost came to. On the flip side, the greed landed me a great job! Now I get to stay home with my kiddos. Was gonna say no more long hours, 48 hour shifts or being short staffed, but now that I think about it, those all still apply. LMAO!
