You are excited, nervous, scared...and probably very sick. Congratulations, you're pregnant! One of the most difficult parts of early pregnancy for women is dealing with morning sickness which can range from mild nausea in the early mornings to a permanent residence at the nearest bathroom. But there are a few great tips and tricks for safe and natural ways to help you cope with the chaos that seems to be your stomach.
Stay Cool: This is particular important for women who are experiencing pregnancy in the summer or who get over heated easily, but when you begin to heat up it often tends to make the nausea worse for many women. Taking a cold cloth and rubbing it under your neck, that tiny spot just beneath your nose, and behind the ears is a simple trick to help settle your stomach.
Use Ginger: Ginger is a great natural remedy for nausea. You can sip on some ginger tea or natural ginger ale, eat a couple of ginger snap cookies (made with real ginger), or use ginger candy to help relieve your symptoms. Ginger is a long time favorite for morning sickness and nausea in general; however, it may make clotting a bit more difficult so if this is a concern for you, you should should speak with your health care provider before using a lot of ginger.
Change Your Diet: Avoiding foods that are high in fats or foods that are very spicy can also help to reduce nausea when you are pregnant. Likewise, you should avoid foods with strong odors such as coffee or garlic even if you are not eating them, the smell can trigger your nausea. Additionally eating several small meals a day instead of just three large ones can help as can nibbling on a simple snack such as saltine crackers before you get out of bed.
Preggie Pops: These little lollipops were my best friends during my last pregnancy. They come in sour fruit flavors which really help settle your stomach and conquer nausea. They are also available in ginger and peppermint. Queesie drops are similar and based on the same idea. Find out more at: http://www.threelollies.com
Peppermint: This is another tried and tested remedy for nausea that has been used for ages. Peppermint candy or tea can help to combat morning sickness and eliminate any bitter after taste that certain foods can have when you are pregnant.
Aromatherapy: The same sort of natural flavors that are used in teas and candies for morning sickness can often also be a great asset when used as aromatherapy. This includes grapefruit and citrus oils as well as peppermint oil. Often during pregnancy your sense of smell is working in high gear which is one reason you are so sensitive to strong odors, so aromatherapy with these clean refreshing scents can be quite helpful. I also used scented lip gloss, even during labor and it actually helped quite a bit. If you do not have aromatherapy oils handy, keeping lemon slices around can do the trick.
Sleep In: For those who have morning sickness that really is only in the mornings, you can sometimes keep it at bay by simply sleeping through it. I found that if I was up and about too early I stayed horribly sick, but if I could stay in bed and sleep in until around 9-10 my days started much more smoothly. And when you are pregnant you certainly need all of the extra rest that you can get.
Popsicles: If you can find natural fruit flavored Popsicles, particularly those with lemon or sour raspberry flavors this will be a refreshing treat that can settle your upset stomach.
Switch Vitamins: Some women have trouble with certain prenatal vitamins. If you find that your morning sickness is worse when you take your vitamins try taking them later in the day or talking to your doctor about trying a different brand.
While morning sickness is a very normal and natural part of the pregnancy experience it is important to make sure that you keep plenty of fluids in you. Getting dehydrated can be dangerous for you and your baby. If you find that you are throwing up a great deal and can not keep liquids down you need to speak to your health care provider to make sure that you do not get dangerously dehydrated and to also keep an eye on your potassium levels which can often drop when you are vomiting excessively.
