There is no doubt that your new little baby boy or girl will be using social media someday.  So why not start early?  Baby blogs have become more and more popular lately, and they’re a great way to blog about your experience throughout your pregnancy. 

Why start a baby blog?  Why not?  It is a great way to share and tell the story of your child.  With parents, grandparents, and family being so spread apart across the country , a blog is a great way to keep everyone up to date.  Sharing a blog is also a great way to share the news!  Simply send an email with a link to your new blog and let everyone be surprised when they find out what it is.  A blog allows you to share sonogram photos, baby tips, decorating ideas, registry, showers, and all sorts of things.  Think how happy it will make your mother in law to be able to see just what is happening with her first grandchild by being able to read the blog.  Convinced?  Let’s get started.

It is simple to start your own baby blog.  Find a platform you like, there are several to choose from.  My favorite blogging platform is www.blogger.com, but there are a myriad of other options including Tumblr, Posterous, and Wordpress as well.  Set up an account and select your blog name.  You could name the blog after your new baby or your family.  The Baby Smith Blog, or Emily and Tim’s Baby Blog, anything you like.  If you start later, after you have selected a name, you could create the blog under their name and continue it throughout their childhood, like OliviaRae.blogspot.com.   Anything you pick would be great, just make sure to come up with a couple of ideas incase your first pick is an unavailable URL.  If you want to get really fancy, purchase OliviaRae.com as some parents are to secure your child’s domain name for their use later in life.

Now that you have your blog address and have started to play around with backgrounds and layouts, it is time to start blogging.  What should you blog about?  Everything.  You can start the blog the moment you start trying to conceive, or when you find out you are pregnant the first time.  Start day one!  Don’t want to share the news with everyone?  Start anonymously.  Keep all the faces out of photos, let only those closest to you know, change names or just use “mommy and daddy,” etc.  This allows you to start the blog in those first exciting days without spilling the news to everyone you know.

Once you are ready to share the news, start posting more pictures and updates on your progress.  Share sonograms and all sorts of things.  It’s a great way keep in touch, share registry and purchases, and network with other moms to be!  So go ahead and give it a try!  Once you start your baby blog, I know you will fall in love with it.
